NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Pharmaceutical companies and regulators are warning consumers to avoid the popular cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor, which treats the condition, in place since it was first introduced by AstraZeneca in 1996. Crestor was approved in 2003 by the FDA and is now widely used and prescribed by doctors in the United States.
The drug's benefits have been overshadowed by controversy over its alleged side effects.
"I'm not going to overstate the importance of the Crestor side effect," said David Kammerer, a consultant professor of clinical pharmacy and marketing at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
"It's a very serious issue and I'm not going to overstate the significance of Crestor."
The Crestor drug is an important medication for patients with a history of heart disease or who have high blood pressure. The drug's safety and efficacy have been established by a clinical trial conducted in patients with a history of a rare but serious condition called coronary artery disease. Crestor was approved in 2003 as an effective drug for the treatment of these serious conditions.

"This makes it a very effective medication for treating atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease and even some cancers," said Dr. J. Robert E. Stacharides, M. D., chairman of the department of medicine at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
The drug can also be used to treat patients with a history of cardiovascular problems and high blood pressure, Dr. Stacharides added. Patients with a history of stroke, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and other serious medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before starting a Crestor prescription.
Dr. Stacharides said that Crestor was approved by the FDA in 2003 for the treatment of heart failure, an umbrella term for patients with known or suspected heart-related conditions. Crestor, also known as rosuvastatin calcium, was first approved by the FDA in 2003. The FDA has required the drug to be tested in animal studies.
In 2009, Crestor was approved by the FDA for use as a statin.
Crestor is not the only statin approved for treating high cholesterol, according to studies conducted by the National Institutes of Health. Two other statins, called statins E4 and S4, were also approved for this use: Lipitor (atorvastatin) and Crestor (simvastatin).
